7. A Sacred Relationship to the Natural World?

No book was holding my attention. “What should I read?” I complained to Bertha. “Here,” she said, and handed me a paperback but warned, “You won’t be able to put it down.”

Back at home, I realized the challenge wasn’t whether I could put it down but whether I would ever pick it up.

Its title was intriguing enough: Of Water and the Spirit, and its author boasted a name mellifluous as water running over stone — Malidoma Somé. But its subtitle seemed to consign it to the genre of tribal voodoo: Ritual, Magic, and Initiation in the Life of an African Shaman. Africa, don’t bother with Google maps, is a long way from Crestone. As for shamanism, I barely knew enough to dismiss it as nature religion dating from long ago. I did open Bertha’s/Malidoma’s book that night in bed long enough to surmise that for shamans natural and supernatural were not opposed but nearly synonymous, sharing the same earthy address.1 However, more I cannot say for I soon drifted off into unconscious night, into a most unshamanic sleep.
